When a bottle store closes: what changed in Ōtara
In May 2023, Wymondley Discount Liquor in Ōtara closed after an application to renew its licence was declined. Ōtara Gambling and Alcohol Action Group and Massey University's SHORE & Whāriki Research Centre surveyed 21 local residents to find out what changed.
The results were striking. Most long-term residents said the store's carpark was no longer a late-night hangout spot for drinking, loud music and underage alcohol access. Many reported less noise, less fighting, less rubbish, and a stronger sense of safety. People felt more comfortable letting their kids walk to the shops and welcomed their children seeing less visible drinking in the community.
Not everyone experienced the same shift. A few residents said little had changed for them, and a small number missed the convenience of a nearby store — though at least one said this had reduced how much they drank.
Problems haven't disappeared entirely from the wider area. Alcohol-related litter, noise and disorder from parties are still reported, likely reflecting the high number of other outlets nearby. Most survey respondents supported reducing the number of takeaway alcohol outlets around Ōtara.
The case study argues that community voices capture changes not visible in official statistics and provide valuable evidence to inform alcohol licensing decisions. The survey and mapping tools developed for the study are available to assist other groups wishing to investigate future outlet closures.
